Restaurant Review: Via Milano, Bangalore

Restaurant Review: Via Milano, Bangalore

What makes a restaurant a success? Food alone does not cut it but the ambiance and service are of equal relevance. While the food in Via Milano, a Bangalore-based Italian restaurant run by Italian expats was reasonably good, it had an impersonal feel to it and the service sucked.

The Salmon was subtle and tasty. The spaghetti and shrimp were good but there was no accompanying bread basket with the main course. We had to remind the waiter to serve it and by then we were already midway through our meal.

Italian - not!

The waiters were completely spaced out. We had to be on the lookout to catch their eye to get even basic needs met. What bugged me was the socialist mentality of waiters hovering over the 'gora' tables while 'naturally' ignoring the desis. One table had three waiters grouped around it. How hard was the decision making?

Once we had finished dinner, our plates were taken in a rather haphazard manner; a few taken by one waiter and another returning to look under napkins in case the side plates were left behind. I was weirded out.

Our coffee orders were mixed up and far from feeling at home at their pristine white 50s-style lounge, I wanted to leave as soon as possible.

Which by the way took another fifteen minutes since they forgot to return our bill till we reminded them that we had been waiting for a long time for the card and check.

Instead of Via Milano, I recommend Fiorano in Koramangala where the service is far better. Another place is Magnolia which despite being crowded on weekends offers impeccable service and awesome Thai food.

Kannada Barutha?

"Kannada Barutha??" ah! I am sure most of you in Bangalore would have heard this, but what is "kannada barutha?" here it goes. Bangalore the IT capital of India, the silicon city and now a Metro city opened its gates to almost all kinds of people. Very evidently the recent poll census proved that there are only 47% of original inhabitants in Bangalore/bengaluru. The life style of the city has seen a gradual change with Pizza Corners replacing MTR's, classy eat out's replacing "Vidyarthi Bhavans" and flashy pub's replacing all our "Mahalakshmi wine shops".

"Change is inevitable" from the days of BEML, HAL and BHEL to INFOSYS, WIPRO; Bangalore has a new look now on the world map. Gone are the days where a typical Sunday for any bangalorean was a nice romantic walk on the pavements of "LALBAGH...", "rave idli and coffee.." at the nearest yet old looking MTR and a wonderful Raj`s/Vishnu`s film either at Santosh or central 'talkies'. Today's Bangalore is deluged in traffic, stress and pressure, Saturday nights without beer is desolate and a Sunday without a visit to either a nearest spa or health clinic is schlocky!! The Gandhibazar's are now AC cooled super markets, majestic is now replaced by ultra modern and diversified Brigade road, sri cauvery coffee joint is now Coffee days… and "Bhagyalakshmi coffee adda…is now barista. With globalization and more retail market the city will definitely see more forceful changes.

Have all these changed our language? Kannada the local language of Bangalore is supposed to be one of the most meaningful language, it also has a unique script as compared to its other counterparts; but how many percentages of people really use Kannada in Bangalore now? The figures are staggering, only 37% of people speak Kannada in the state's capital, for rest it is only "Kannada barutha?"

Any normal guy starts with this sentence "Kannada barutha?" while talking to other person, people confirm before they speak the language. You want to ask an address in Bangalore? Or reply to a question then English is the most preferred language other than Hindi. It's a famous fact that two kannidagas in an IT company always talk in a neutral language!! Even the vendors and shop keepers are channeled with this new wave, the moment when you step in any shop in Bangalore, you are always asked "Kannada barutha?" or the entire conversation takes place in non Kannada languages. People have lost the confidence of speaking in the local language and more over speaking Kannada on the streets of "M.G road "or "kormangala" is substandard.

Shopping malls in the city have been completely banned from using Kannada, not a forced one but definitely an adapted one. One has to confirm that the other person knows the language before he starts using any language. "Ondu glass beer" is a insult when it comes to any decorous pub in Bangalore. "Swalpa menu card kodthira...?" has been replaced by "Can I have the menu card pls…?"

Just to hit some facts, Marathi is still the largest and common speaking language in Mumbai even though Mumbai has the highest no of inhabitants. Telugu is a practiced ritual in yet another IT HUB Hyderabad. When it comes to tamilnadu, beware you can be alive either if you are a fan of rajnikanth or you know Tamil. Malayalam runs in the blood of every mallu be it Kuwait, Dubai or any hospital; but when it comes to Kannada it is always "kannada barutha?" and next is "namaskara."
I am not a Kannada activist neither I run any Kannada supporting organization, I am just a plebeian who just love the language. Globalisation is the trend and modernization is the mantra but at the cost the language? Sounds no logic… is speaking Kannada down market? The answer has to be found within oneself. Next time when you hear "kannada barutha?" you just remember that "kannada runs in your blood..."

Travel Review: Bangalore's Innovative Film City

If you have enough money in your pocket, all the wonders and attractions in the world will walk up to you and park themselves near you, so that you can visit them as and when you want, without having to go around the world and hop cities. The Innovative Film City is one such ambitious project that brings a lot of world attractions to India. It is a place that is aiming to be one stop shop for all forms of modern day entertainment.

The Innovative Film City is located about 40 kms from Bangalore on Mysore road, a good strategic location as it will be accessible from both Bangalore and Mysore. The whole city is said to be spread over 58 acres, but to me it looks slightly larger than that. The place is still under construction but was opened formally in April, 2008. There are few attractions and amusements which are operational, some are in the process of coming up and some are planned to come.

The Film City is planned to provide 360 degree solutions for entertainment, both for the customers of entertainment industry and the industry itself. Its website says three major planned sections of entertainment. The first is Innovative Attractions which covers amusements, attractions, museums and entertainment. The second is Innovative Style which covers shopping, dining, leisure & lifestyle. The third is Innovative Studio which would have an academy, studio and facilities for film shooting and production.

Of the attractions, most are ready or almost ready. There are museums like Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Museum, Guinness Book of World Records and Jurassic Fossil museum. There are attractions like Dinosaur world, miniature city, Snow Park, mock sets, cartoon city, haunted mansion. In Amusements, they have Funplex where you can play many video and high end games and also see a 4-D movie. Then there is go-karting, mirror maze, mini golf, aqua kingdom where you can go and play around for some time. There are two amphitheaters - one an open one with a seating capacity of more than 5000 people and another for children. A 21 screen multiplex is planned too. The other two segments Style and Studio are yet to come up.

The facade of the city gives a magnificent look. As you take a turn from the road, and enter the city it makes you feel as if you are entering something majestic. As you go inside, at this point in time you see a lot of construction going on, but you can also see that something world class is being built, both in terms of attractions and the way the facility is being managed. There are a lot of employees spread across the length and breadth of the city who keep guiding you towards various places, though there are well printed maps and guides that they hand you over with the tickets. The facility is very well maintained even though half of it is still under construction. There is a food court where you get various cuisines at reasonable prices, and there are Cafe Coffee Day outlets for your caffeine and snacking needs. Drinking water is available at various places.

Entry to the city is priced at Rs 50/- per person and each attraction comes at an additional cost which ranges from Rs 50/- to Rs 200/- . You can plan for Rs 800-1000 per person for a day to visit to the film city, and I am sure you can see only a part of it in a day. Once it is complete, it looks like there will be many things that will keep bringing people back to the film city, especially the huge and well designed amphitheater. I think this is going to become a major destination for the future shows in the city. Parking is outside the film city on the road at the moment, I am not sure if a proper parking area is planned, but I hope there is one, otherwise that may become a bottleneck very soon. Probably they may also want to come up with differential pricing for people who might not be able to afford the current or the future pricing. Maybe something like happy hours on weekdays…

Overall, this is a good project that brings something new and different to the city to keep it engaged. I usually do not like visiting artificial places but I would still say that it is definitely worth one visit, post which you can take a call if you want to visit it again.

Procedure to start a Software Company in Bangalore

In the last few days, I have been going through net to collect information about the procedures involved in starting a software company in Bangalore. To my surprise, I did not find even a single site which had a detailed step-by-step information. Although I found some consulting companies who claim to do all the stuffs for me, but I guess they would be quite expensive for a small fish like me. Even the official website of Nasscom doesnt say much on these, what they talk about is the government policies etc which sounds very complicated for a techie like me. Also there can be many types of software company, there should be detailed description on each of these I guess. Does that mean that there is not much being done to groom or help entrepreneurs from Indian Software Industry ? Anyways I hope there is some platform for people like me and I will definitely hunt it down. I will ensure that if I do start my sw firm, I would provide the detailed information & procedure I have gone through so that someone like me do not need to waste time in googling …

Anyways if someone has a idea please let me know….

Deccan Aviation starts airport helicopter ferry service in Bangalore

Indian charter company Deccan Aviation has launched a helicopter taxi service to bring passengers from Bangalore's new international airport to destinations within the city.

"The service will address the issue of airport connectivity for business travellers to the city and provide a convenient alternative to road travel," says the company, which has christened the new service Deccan SkyLimo.

Deccan, which began the Bangalore service with a Bell 206 and plans to add a second helicopter shortly, hopes to provide a direct connection for air passengers throughout India. It is investing almost $7 million to begin similar operations in Mumbai and Hyderabad with two helicopters in each city.

Bengaluru International airport, which is around 40km (25 miles) from the city, began operations in May. However, the infrastructure around it has not been developed yet and the journey to the city can take up to 50min in clogged roads. Deccan says that the SkyLimo, which will drop passengers off at three points, can cut that time by half.

The passengers will be charged Rp4,800-5,800 ($111-134), with each helicopter carrying up to eight people. The cost includes transport to the Deccan helipad, 1km away from the airport. The company says that it hopes to build a permanent helipad inside the airport eventually.

Deccan is primarily targeting professionals in the IT industry. Bangalore, India's IT hub, houses almost 1,700 international and Indian companies from the sector and has become a major global destination. Its airport now has about 350-400 flights a day, with up to 35,000 passengers flying in and out of the city daily.

Uncomforting passport experience at Bangalore One

Around 2 months back, I had approached the Bangalore one center inside RTO at Rajajinagar for applying for passport. The person was before me was an elderly gentleman who was angry with the authorities for their bad service. Apparently the passport required a proof of marriage. The previous day, it seems the authorities had actually told him since he was a senior citizen, such a proof wasn’t required and he was actually sent back since the photo of his required to be in a white background . But on that day, he was told that they couldn’t continue with the process since there wasn’t a marriage photo or certificate for proof of marriage. Hence it was natural of him, considering that it was the authorities’ mistake, that they acting as if it was no fault of theirs was not acceptable. So imagine the mistake on the authorities part that there were 2 women who were in charge of processing the form, one would tend to be a little forgiving for their mistakes, considering pity since they weren’t rude. The gentleman had come from a considerably far-off place( think chandra layout). So such a experience , that too considering his age was truly harrowing for him. He might as well considered another place for his submission but he thought this wasn’t that busy so he might approach here.

Such an experience did not elude me as well. At first I was sent back stating that there needed to be an attested copy of the Xth report card(which served as a proof of date of birth). The next day I submitted the particulars and they apparently told me that nothing else was wrong with the other documents. Around a month and a half, I completed my police verification by going to the police station and submitting some necessary documents( There I had to submit some extra records, some which was missed by the authorities, again I had to take the trouble of doing that). After the verification, I thought everything would finally fall into place. But last week, nearly 50 days after applying , I received a letter saying that there needed to be a proof of date of birth and that after further enquiries, that the Xth report card wasn’t enough was what I was told. Hence I had to first get my original date of birth certificate, ( That was another time consuming process), then i had to submit the attested xerox copy of it.

Will the concerned higher authorities take notice, apart from easing the red-tape work that usually takes place? ( There are several instances where certain people, if they find out that you are new for things like , say renewal of passport at such places say RTO, then they would misguide you to saying that the process if carried out by them would take lesser time and in the process force you to shell out more money from you for processing red-tape work. The time taken would generally be almost the same even if you did it on your own, and at the half the expense. No doubt there are link ups between the some of the officials and the middle-men, and these middle-men if they come to know that there happen to be people who are unaware of the processes, force them to fall into this predicament. This is a true instance of my friend’s).

SUGGESTIONS :

1.There needs to be more clear protocols that people need to be known about before approaching such places for such purposes. This way it would discourage corruption.

2.Also people need to be enlightened about the procedures involved for carrying out their requirements( such as issue of pamphlets saying what needs to be done where and so on).

3.The service at such important centres such as this passport outlet at bangalore one needs to be improved and feedbacks/complaints need to be seriously considered.

ADVICE:

Take any friend/ family member who knows all the processes involved along with you if you are there a particular reason for the first time.

Ask the officials who are seated inside for instructions and help

Do not talk to any strangers who might look like prospective middlemen. (They might cleverly lure you by saying that the work can be done faster, but do not pay any heed to them). Such middlemen usually keep wandering around without any fixed place, looking for people they can lure.

Do not have a look on your face saying you are lost. Be confident and try to look as if you know what you are doing even though you really don’t.

* About Driving in Bangalore - The real picture

Truck Drivers:

You usually don’t get to see them directly because they sit

somewhere at an altitude. You can however identify the cabin crew by a frantically waving hand on the non-driver side. This hand belongs to a crew-member called ‘cleaner’ and all scholastic efforts till date have failed
to decipher the symbolic meaning of these waving. It is however Safe to assume that these waving mean ’stay away’. Fortunately the trucks are prohibited from the arterial roads. But you can see them racing each other at 30 kmph and 31 kmph on the ring road. They successfully block the whole width of the road. It is advised that you take them over from left (yes, the wrong side), for they won’t let you pass from the right side anyway. The other advice is to keep away from them.

BMTC Drivers:

Bus ride in bangalore

You can see them from a mile away from the distinguishing color and driving. It can be very dangerous and frustrating to follow a BMTC bus. The bus follows Heisenberg’s uncertainty
principle and at any instance you can not predict the speed AND the position correctly. One observation that might help the reader is that they always keep right between bus stops and move to left (well, almost) at bus stops. This is the apt opportunity for you to take the bus over and go stuck behind the next one. The drivers can be seen although mostly through the bus’s rear view mirror. If you happen to see them directly through their window, be prepared to listen to advice for having taken them over in a dangerous fashion. While a normal bus can easily create a road block on any given road, there are special capacity joint-buses (called janti vaahana) which have an uncanny power of blocking up to 3 roads at a time at a junction.

Cab Drivers:

Characterized by red eyes, irritable nature, unkempt facial hair, constant honking even at stationary object! They always try to go at 80 kmph, assume the urgency of an ambulance and expect everyone else has less important job. Most of them do not sleep for days together and some of them are trying to compete with David Blain for stretching human limits. The author personally knows few cab drivers who do not have a habitat. They just keep a pair of spare uniform in the cab, eat sleep in the cab and use public bathrooms. Driving style of these indicates that many of them were auto rickshaw driver earlier. However, they still seem to carry the self image of an auto rickshaw and try to squeeze a MUV into the 1 meter gap
between any two objects.

Car Drivers:

Characterized by creased foreheads. Having paid through their noses and fighting to pay the EMI, they are obsessive about their cars and want to make sure nobody bumps/scratches their car body. This sits on the mind perpetually and causes those creases on foreheads. Most pitiable class of drivers having the most to lose from the mistakes of other classes of drivers.

Auto Rickshaw Drivers:

Having stood over years as undisputed symbol for rash driving, they are unfortunately losing grounds to cab drivers.(Unfortunate because a rashly driven MUV is more dangerous than a rashly driven auto rickshaw). Auto rickshaws are the vehicles with most diverse speed ranges. They travel at speeds approaching zero when they have no passengers aboard and travel at speed of unto 3×108 m/s when a passenger is aboard. Analogous to the belief that “a cat can pass through any hole that is bigger than its skull” auto rickshaws can “pass through any gap that is wider than the headlight”. They defy all laws of Physics. A typical auto driver sits with a calm and indifferent attitude of a formula-1 driver just before the race. Based on his age, he is a Rajkumar/Shankarnag/Darshan fan. He feels strongly towards these actors and towards Karnataka and Kannada. In a surprising observation, many auto drivers refuse 1.5 times the meter reading after 10 PM if you are exiting from Ranga Shankara*. This is their humble way
of commemorating their favorite star who made films like Auto-Raja.

* Ranga Shankara is a theater built in memory of late Shankar Nag and it is the place
where all new dramas are staged first

Two Wheeler Drives:

The class in the most advantageous position. They consist of a variety of sub-populations
like office goers, salesmen, mothers dropping children to school, college students, neighborhood store owner transporting about 1 ton weight on a moped, whole families of 4-5 children going on an outing etc. They usually mind their own business and do not cause inconvenience to other types of vehicles. They use all possible space on and around the road, including footpaths, medians, drainages, staircases etc and thus enhance infrastructure utilization.
